This town was one of seven communities founded in 1727 at a time when the Granite State was still part of Massachusetts. Chichester was named for Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, Earl of Chichester and Secretary of State of England from 1724 to 1754. Pelham-Holles, who headed colonial policy changes, was highly involved in relations between England and the American colonies. Chichester's charter – used as a model for other towns – required planting and cultivation and the building of homes, roads, schools, and a church within five years of the community's establishment.
